Selective cuts that guide stronger branch structure and support the tree’s long-term health.
Removal of dead, broken or hanging branches that may pose a risk to people, property or the tree.
Thoughtful pruning around roofs, driveways, sidewalks and streets while preserving the tree’s natural form.
Early correction of crossing, competing or poorly attached branches to reduce future structural problems.
Removal of broken or damaged limbs after severe weather, with priority based on urgency and site conditions.
What Professional Pruning Accomplishes
Professional pruning is the selective removal of branches to achieve a specific objective—not simply cutting back the canopy. Depending on the tree, that objective may be to remove dead or broken limbs, improve branch structure, create necessary clearance, correct storm damage or guide a young tree as it develops.
Every pruning plan should account for the tree’s species, age, condition, location and the time of year.
Well-planned pruning can:
• Support sound structure and future growth
• Remove dead, damaged, crossing or weakly attached branches
• Improve clearance around structures, streets and walkways
• Address storm damage before small problems become larger
• Preserve the tree’s natural form while meeting practical property needs
Poor cuts, topping or removing too much live canopy can cause long-term stress and weak regrowth. Marv’s Tree Service focuses on the minimum pruning needed to meet the objective while protecting the tree’s health and character.

Before work begins, we evaluate the tree and surrounding site, discuss your goals and identify the type of pruning that fits the situation. Your written estimate explains the proposed work and how cleanup will be handled.
• Qualified Evaluation: Arborists certified through the Nebraska Arborist Association evaluate the tree’s species, condition, structure, nearby targets and equipment access.
• Appropriate Methods: We use structural pruning, clearance pruning, deadwood removal and crown reduction when appropriate. We do not recommend topping.
• Professional Equipment: Climbing systems, aerial lifts, rigging and compact equipment are selected according to the tree and property.
• Property Protection: We plan equipment access and take reasonable measures to protect nearby structures, lawns and landscaping.
• Thorough Cleanup: Brush and debris from the agreed-upon pruning work are handled according to the written estimate.

Tree trimming is often used as a general term for managing appearance or clearance. Professional pruning describes selective cuts made for a defined objective, such as removing deadwood, improving structure, reducing selected branches or providing clearance. The terms overlap in everyday use; the important question is what work will be performed and why.
We provide structural pruning, deadwood removal, clearance pruning, crown reduction when appropriate, corrective pruning for young trees and pruning of storm-damaged limbs. The right method depends on the tree and the objective.
Late winter is often a good pruning window for many Nebraska deciduous trees, but timing depends on the species, condition and pruning objective. Oaks require special consideration because fresh wounds during active insect periods can increase oak-wilt risk. Dead, broken or immediately hazardous branches may require attention regardless of season.
There is no universal schedule. Pruning frequency depends on species, age, growth rate, location, previous work and condition. Young trees may benefit from more frequent structural attention, while mature trees often need periodic inspection and targeted pruning rather than routine canopy removal.
Common signs include dead, broken or hanging branches; branches that cross or rub; weak attachments; storm damage; and limbs interfering with roofs, streets, driveways or walkways. A noticeable change in the canopy or new cracking should also be evaluated.
No tree can be made storm-proof. Correct pruning may reduce certain risks by addressing deadwood, weak attachments or poorly distributed branches, but severe weather can damage even well-maintained trees. Pruning should be treated as risk reduction—not a guarantee.

No. Topping removes large portions of the canopy, leaves significant wounds and often produces weakly attached regrowth. When a tree’s height or spread must be reduced, properly placed reduction cuts may be an alternative if the tree’s structure allows it.
Yes. Removing excessive live foliage can reduce photosynthesis, stress the tree and trigger unwanted regrowth. The appropriate amount depends on the species, age, health, season and pruning objective. We favor targeted cuts and the minimum effective amount of live-canopy removal.
Trees near energized utility lines require special coordination. Never approach a branch touching a power line or attempt this work yourself. OPPD manages vegetation around many distribution and transmission lines. We can evaluate the site and help determine whether utility coordination is required.
Yes. The City of Omaha requires an Arborist License for businesses performing arboricultural work. Marv’s Tree Service is licensed and insured, with arborists certified through the Nebraska Arborist Association.
Cost depends on the tree’s size, number and diameter of branches, access, nearby structures or utility lines, required equipment and cleanup scope. An on-site evaluation allows us to provide a written estimate based on the actual tree and property.
